Information that can be used to identify or locate a specific individual.

Commentary:

  • Personally identifiable information includes information that can directly identify a person, such as a government identification number, or information that can be reasonably used in combination with other data points, such as location data from a mobile phone used in conjunction with an individual’s home and office location.
  • As a result, a given piece of information may or may not constitute PII depending on context and what other data is associated with it.
