A proxy is a server that acts as a relay between a client and server. It may replace a web user’s IP address with another one.

- Unlike VPNs, which capture all network traffic, a proxy only functions at the application layer (i.e., for the application where you set up the proxy, such as a web browser), and typically does not encrypt traffic.
