Throttling

A method of reducing potentially negative impacts of actions taken by internet users, such that they can only perform a given number of actions (such as posting content, creating accounts, or engaging with others) within a given period of time.

Commentary:

  • Once a limit is hit by a user account, that user is not able to again perform the action until the time limit specified by system administrators has passed.
  • Throttling is often used as one of several tools to combat unwanted automation such as spam and bot accounts. Also known as “rate-limiting.”
